Busy Court Week
Lots of court cases this week to talk about. You saw us report on the “Black WIdows” trial yesterday and later in the day the MetroLink Crash Case and today the Motrin Trial.
Regarding the Black Widows, I find it amusing the way these titles come about. Who came up with that? It makes it easy to remember, though, doesn’t it? Instead of saying the Rutterschmidt/Golay case, we say the “Black Widows” and you know exactly what we’re referring to.
This morning’s case is an interesting one. The Motrin Trial in Malibu could have nationwide ramifications. A family is suing Johnson & Johnson claiming their daughter went blind after taking Children’s Motrin. A verdict is expected today.
Here’s a bit of irony with the case: the family’s name is JOHNSON, the case is against JOHNSON and JOHNSON and the illness the little girl has is called Stevens-JOHNSON Syndrome. Did you notice?

Missing Girls in San Dimas
Missing for 24 hours now, a 12-yearold and an 8-year-old who may have taken off in their foster parents’ 1998 dark-blue Lexus ES-300. What I don’t get is that it has this “LoJack” system in it, which I’ve seen advertised before. The company’s website claims to recover vehicles with the system within 24 hours. So where is it?

Waiting for Wildfires
It no secret, they are coming. And with the 4th of July ahead next week, it’s even more dangerous. The Governator is asking for Californians NOT to buy fireworks because of the drought and dry conditions. I don’t blame him.
Where we were this morning, it was actually pretty sad to see what fire can do. We drove up Latigo Canyon in Malibu where fires last fall destroyed some homes. You can see in this picture I took the charred palm trees behind our live van.
For our live shots, my photogpher Elliot helped demonstrate the huge house that no longer stood where we were. This picture shows him down below, perhaps where a basement minibar had been. I can only imagine with how big this house was, how cool it might have been inside!
So what’s the lesson? Don’t burn anything unless you absolutely have to. And remember defensible space!!
I wasn’t here when the wildfires raged So.Cal. Tell me your stories, fill me in. Blog with me.

How Safe is Baja?
I had mentioned previously in our discussions on this blog about our trip to Baja, Mexico. Last week we met with high-ranking government officials, local shop owners and tourists to talk about what’s happening in Mexico. It seems daily we’re reporting news of another shootout with police. We wanted to see how that was affecting tourism on La Avenida de la Revolucion. What we found out was that it was affecting it very much, to the point of being empty. There is a huge difference in Tijuana these days. So what’s it going to take to get “The Most Visited City in the World” back on its feet?
Check out our special report and then blog with us. What are your thoughts on what’s happening down there? What are your memories of day trips down south?

Missing Man from Hemet
There are times in this business where we can really help someone. Today is one of those.
Keep an eye on KNBC.com and the Channel 4 News for this story: a missing man from Hemet. 80-year-old Edward Clayton Andrews was last seen May 31st leaving his Hemet home. On June 4th he was officially listed as missing and since then someone’s been taking money from his bank account.
Riverside Sheriff Investigators now have ATM surveillance pics of the suspect and they say he’s taken about $92,000 out of the account! So obviously, he has the PIN number. Question is: who is this guy? And where’s Edward?
The pictures are very clear: if there’s someone out there who knows him, they’ll recognize him instantly. And whoever he is, could be from anywhere – there have been transactions in LA County, Orange County and Riverside County.
Tune in, check it out. It’s kind of creepy, to be honest. And investigators now say the whole case looks to have some foul play.

Neat Town Down South
Good morning! This NewsRaw Morning Blog comes to you from beautiful San Diego, California! I’m en route for a special report I’m working on in Mexico. My photographer (Jose Hernandez) and I just had breakfast at a place along the San Diego Bay. I gotta say, I’ve never really been here before, only passed through it, but man this is a cool town! All the neat restaurants in the gasligh district, the stadium, the boats, it’s so cool! I really need to spend more time down here. Any specific suggestions?
I’ll try to file a few more of these during our trip, but if I don’t, know that I’ll see you again Thursday on Today in LA.

It’s a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Toluca Lake. Minus the black cloud in the sky and the eye-watering smell of burning plastic, it’s quite nice. And I’m working. I was called in today to join our team coverage of the fire at Universal City. My angle is the air quality. While the South Coast Air Quality Management District says it’s not to be too much of a concern, doctors tell us those with breathing problems, the elderly, etc. do have to worry. Their suggestion: keep doors and windows closed or go somewhere else if you can smell or see the smoke.
We found some people planning to do just that – one woman we saw walking with her hand over her face, she called the smell disgusting. An elderly man told us he was on his veranda this morning and couldn’t take it anymore and had to go inside.
I’m sure we’ll be on this story as a follow-up during Today in LA Monday and for the first few live shots, we’ll be in darkness. It’ll be interesting to see if there’s still any smoldering smoke billowing from Universal City in the morning. See you then?
